Sending one reference photo may be enough to start a conversation, but it is rarely enough to produce an accurate knitwear sample. Before development begins, the factory has to translate a design into decisions about yarn, gauge, stitch structure, measurements, construction, colors, trims, branding and finishing.
The purpose of a Tech Pack is therefore not to create more paperwork. It is to reduce interpretation and give the buyer and manufacturer a shared technical reference.
1. Start With Clear Front and Back Design Views
The manufacturer first needs to understand what the garment is supposed to look like. Technical flats are ideal because they show construction more clearly than lifestyle photography. A development package should normally include both front and back views.
Important design details should be visible or annotated, including neckline shape, sleeve construction, hem shape, rib widths, plackets, pockets, zippers, buttons, side slits and any special trims.
If the style includes intarsia, jacquard, cables, pointelle, openwork structures or other decorative knitting, mark their approximate placement on the garment.
Reference photographs are useful, but explain what each image is showing. One photo may be a silhouette reference while another may only show a stitch texture. This prevents the factory from assuming every detail should be copied.
2. Include a Measurement Chart, Even for the First Sample
Terms such as oversized, relaxed fit, slim fit or cropped describe design intent, but they are not manufacturing measurements.
For a sweater or knit top, the manufacturer may need dimensions such as chest width, body length, shoulder width, sleeve length, sleeve opening, armhole depth, neckline width and depth, hem width and rib height. The exact measurement points depend on the garment construction.
At minimum, provide measurements for the sample size you want developed. If complete grading is already available, include the full size specification. If grading has not yet been finalized, state which sample size should be made first and which measurements are still provisional.

Measurements, yarn direction and knit structure should be reviewed together before the first development sample.
Knitted garments can change after washing, steaming and finishing, so measurements become especially important when an approved sample is transferred into bulk production.

3. Give the Manufacturer a Yarn Direction, Not Just a Fiber Name
Writing “100% cotton” or “wool blend” is a starting point, but it may not fully define the material. Different yarns with the same nominal fiber composition can produce very different hand feel, weight, drape, surface texture and price.
If you already have a yarn specification, send it. If you do not, explain the result you want to achieve.
A physical reference garment or yarn swatch can also be useful when matching hand feel is important. A capable knitwear manufacturer should discuss suitable yarn directions rather than selecting material based only on fiber composition.
4. Specify Gauge and Knit Structure When You Know Them
Gauge influences the density, appearance, weight and construction of knitted garments. If the design has already been technically developed, include the intended gauge in the Tech Pack.
If it has not, do not guess. Provide the design objective and allow the manufacturer to evaluate the relationship between yarn count, machine gauge and stitch structure.
The same principle applies to jersey, rib, Milano, cable, jacquard, intarsia, pointelle, mesh, tuck stitches or combinations of several techniques. Whenever possible, identify which structure belongs to each area of the garment.
5. Define Every Colorway Clearly
Color information can create unnecessary development delays when it is scattered across emails, screenshots and messaging apps. Ideally, each colorway should have a clear code or name.
Pantone references, physical yarn swatches, lab dips or approved yarn shade references can be used depending on the development stage and material.
For multicolor sweaters, jacquards, intarsia or striped knitwear, identify where each color is used. A clear color map reduces the risk of correct colors being placed in the wrong areas.
Color planning is also commercial. For CZ Knitwear adult garment programs, standard custom bulk production normally starts from 100 pieces per color. Providing the expected color breakdown during development helps the factory understand the intended production program.
6. Send Original Artwork for Logos, Jacquard and Intarsia
A screenshot of a logo may communicate the idea, but it is usually not the best production file. If the design contains branding or artwork, provide the highest-quality original file available together with dimensions, placement and color references.
For knitted graphics, artwork may need to be adapted to the stitch resolution that can physically be produced. Extremely fine lines or small details may require simplification when translated into knitted stitches.

Artwork, color placement, labels, buttons and trims should be defined clearly enough for the factory to source or develop the correct components.
Include Labels, Buttons, Zippers and Other Trims
If the sample requires a specific button, zipper, puller, woven label, care label, embroidery, leather patch or other branding component, include the specification before sampling whenever possible.
If the exact trim has not yet been selected, state that clearly. For example: “Button: factory to propose 2–3 suitable options in a natural shell-effect finish.”
A Tech Pack should communicate both confirmed specifications and development responsibilities.
7. Show Construction Details That Cannot Be Seen From the Front
Many sampling problems happen because construction details are obvious to the designer but invisible to the manufacturer.
Add detail drawings or callouts where necessary. Particularly important areas can include neckline finishing, shoulder construction, armhole linking, cuffs, hem ribs, plackets, pocket attachment, side seams and special knitted panels.
If a particular construction method is essential, specify it. If you care primarily about the final appearance and are open to the factory proposing the best manufacturing method, state that instead.
8. Tell the Factory Your Expected Production Quantity
Quantity should not wait until after the sample has been completed. The expected order quantity can influence yarn sourcing, color development, production planning and which construction solutions are commercially realistic.
Tell the manufacturer approximately how many pieces you expect per style and per color.

You do not need to guarantee the final bulk quantity before sampling, but a realistic estimate helps both sides evaluate the project properly.
9. Share Your Target Timeline Before Development Begins
If the product is intended for a specific collection launch, buying appointment, campaign or delivery window, tell the manufacturer before development starts.
A realistic timeline should account for technical review, yarn sourcing, sample development, sample shipping, fit review, revisions, approval and bulk production.

10. Do You Need a Complete Tech Pack Before Contacting a Knitwear Factory?
Not always. A complete Tech Pack is the most efficient starting point when the design has already been technically developed, but many brands contact manufacturers earlier in the product-development process.
You may have technical flats but no yarn specification. You may have measurements but still need help selecting gauge. Or you may have reference photographs and a clear design direction without a finished Tech Pack.
“Silhouette and measurements are confirmed. Yarn and gauge need factory recommendation.” is much more actionable than “Please make exactly like this photo.”

11. A Good Manufacturer Should Ask You Questions Too
Buyers often evaluate suppliers by how quickly they answer. During product development, however, the quality of the questions a factory asks can be more important than the speed of a simple “yes, we can make it.”
If measurements are missing, the manufacturer should notice. If the requested yarn does not work well with the intended gauge, the technical team should raise the issue. If an intarsia artwork is too detailed for the proposed construction, that should be discussed before knitting begins.

Technical questions before sampling are often a positive sign that the manufacturer is reviewing the style as a production project rather than simply accepting an order.
A supplier that asks specific questions is not necessarily making the project more complicated. In many cases, those questions are evidence that someone is actually reviewing the design as a manufacturing project.
12. What Should You Send Before Requesting a Knitwear Sample?
- Front and back technical flats or clear design views
- Reference images with notes explaining what each image is showing
- Sample size and measurement chart
- Fit or silhouette direction
- Yarn composition or target hand-feel direction
- Gauge specification, if already confirmed
- Knit structure or stitch references
- Colorways and color references
- Logo or artwork files with dimensions and placement
- Button, zipper, label and trim requirements
- Construction details that are not obvious from the main drawings
- Estimated bulk quantity per style and per color
- Target sample and production timeline
- Packaging or labeling requirements that affect sample development
- A clear note identifying which specifications still require factory recommendations
The goal is not to make the document longer. The goal is to remove ambiguity.
What Happens After the Manufacturer Receives Your Files?
The next step should be a technical review rather than immediate bulk pricing. The factory may review yarn availability, gauge, knitting structure, measurements, artwork, trims and construction before confirming how the sample should be developed.
Questions or revisions at this stage are normal. Identifying production issues before sampling is generally less costly than discovering them after the garment has already been knitted and shipped.
Once the development direction is confirmed, the sample becomes a physical test of those decisions. The buyer can then review fit, dimensions, yarn, construction, workmanship and finishing before approving or requesting revisions.

A good knitwear sample is not created from the Tech Pack alone. It comes from the combination of clear buyer requirements and competent factory interpretation.
The buyer should communicate the design, fit, material direction, colors, branding, quantities and commercial requirements as clearly as possible. The manufacturer should review those specifications, identify technical gaps and raise questions before production decisions are locked in.
That is the real purpose of knitwear tech pack requirements: not paperwork for its own sake, but a shared manufacturing reference that reduces assumptions from the first sample through bulk production.
