Developing custom knitwear involves more than sending a sketch to a factory. The finished garment is shaped by yarn composition, yarn count, knitting gauge, stitch structure, measurements, workmanship, finishing and quality control.

For fashion brands, understanding the OEM knitwear manufacturing process makes communication clearer and helps reduce avoidable sampling delays. It also allows buyers to prepare more accurate specifications before asking for a quotation or starting development.

1. Project Brief and Tech Pack Review

The process normally begins with a project brief. A complete tech pack is the most efficient starting point because it gives the manufacturer a structured reference for design, measurements, construction, yarn, trims, labels and packaging.

5. Prototype Sampling

A development sample may take around 7–15 days after the yarn and specifications are confirmed. More complex jacquard, intarsia, embroidery, crochet-look or special-structure projects may require additional time.

The first sample is used to evaluate fit, length, sleeve shape, neckline, stitch scale, hand feel, color, trim position and overall appearance. Revisions are a normal part of custom development.

6. Sample Review and Pre-Production Approval

Bulk production should begin only after the essential project details are approved. Depending on the project, approval may include:

  • Folding and packaging requirements

8. Quality Control and Final Inspection
